Hollis's story
Third generation on the same stubborn soil, he came to the new town because the old valley flooded twice in five years. He keeps a ledger of every rainfall since he was twelve.
What drives him
- Wants: Grow enough grain that nobody in town goes hungry through the first winter.
- Fears: A failed harvest with the whole town watching.
Who Hollis knows
- Odette Marlow · Friends. He supplies her grain; she pays on time and talks the whole visit.
- Thea Lindqvist · Old history. Old history from the valley; neither will say what happened.
